The First Screening Report of GOOD DESIGN AWARD 2024! The results will be announced on July 2

The GOOD DESIGN AWARD screening is carried out by a screening unit for each field of design. Each unit has four to five judges. They examine entries assigned to their units.

For two consecutive years, there are 19 units in total. A wide range of design fields, from houseware to architecture, systems and services, as well as initiatives and activities, are examined at the same time.

How is the first screening performed?

The first screening is based on the information registered on the entry site. First, the judges vote online in advance. At the First Screening Session, they engage in discussion based on the voting results, review each of subject entries, and select the entries for the second screening.

In some cases, discussions take place not only in the unit but also across many fields. The chairperson and vice chairpersons also participated in the discussion, adopting multiple perspectives.

In the first screening for this year, one intern from a design university or graduate school nationwide participated in each unit. While providing administrative support for the screening, interns also learned from the perspectives of leading designers and professionals.

Mr. Seiichi Saito, chairperson, has also been a judge at design awards around the world. "The design award, which simultaneously examines all kinds of designs including both social design and product design, is quite unique in the world," he said, explaining a key feature of the GOOD DESIGN AWARD.

Because it covers a wide range of design, it’s possible to explore this year's and future design trends through the screening. In light of the trends, he said, "The main role of the GOOD DESIGN AWARD may be to appreciate new trends. I want to let people know about new ideas and designs through this award.”

In addition, some 30 new judges have joined this year. The number of judges from overseas has also increased. In addition to the diversity of design fields, the screening is conducted from a global perspective.

Applicants will be notified of the results of the first screening on July 2. Those who pass the first round of screening will register their information for the second round of screening, and preparations will begin for the Second Screening Session, which will be held at Makuhari Messe.
