Know the “now” of design! GOOD DESIGN EXHIBITION 2024

At the GOOD DESIGN EXHIBITION 2024 held in Tokyo Midtown, in addition to this year’s more than 1,500 prize-winning designs, the winners of the “LONG LIFE DESIGN AWARD,” given to designs which have been loved for many years, will also be on show.

In addition, the “GOOD DESIGN STORE TOKYO by NOHARA” pop-up store selling GOOD DESIGN AWARD winning products will be open only for the exhibition period. This is a big event where you can be the first to see, touch, buy, and incorporate award-winning designs from various genres into your life.

During the exhibition period, there will also be daily talks by winners and judges. The judges, who are professionals from each field, will talk about the design trends which became visible to them through the screening and what it is like behind the scenes of the GOOD DESIGN AWARD. For an exhibition where the diversity of design can be felt

In this year’s screening, we heard over and over “Let’s eliminate the boundary between product design and concept design.”

When the awards were announced, too, the chair of the screening committee mentioned that the definition of design had diversified, commenting that “We were able to find the shoots of new design by cutting across different screening units and carrying out the screening of a single design from various viewpoints, including the product aspect and the concept aspect.”

Here, we introduce the concept for this winners’ exhibition in which the 2024 GOOD DESIGN AWARDS are expressed.

There was a need for a cohesive exhibition structure shared across various different spaces, such as an atrium with natural light, the large hall in the basement, and meeting rooms on the upper floors.

The warm cedarwood furniture rented from Ishinomaki Laboratory is arranged in a simple and orderly manner so that you can focus on the winning pieces. In addition, we wanted to expand Mr. Kishino’s graphic, an iconic round red circle, out into the space, so we used a sphere as a motif for various purposes.

There is a large hanging artwork that acts as the main face of the exhibition, signage that is printed with the zoning number and springs from the tabletops, as well as ones to show the route. Enjoy touring the entire museum and encountering the many award-winning works in just the same way as searching for a wonderful book in a library.

I made a few decisions when making the visuals for the GOOD DESIGN EXHIBITION. These were not to create a new visual element; to be universal; and to express the GOOD DESIGN EXHIBITION just as it is.

So I sublimated the red circle, the symbol of the GOOD DESIGN AWARD, into the visual of a dot. The dot itself is a visual which is found everywhere, but by providing several patterns, I have represented the gathering together of diverse “good designs” (= works) through large and small dots and also expressed the lively and fun atmosphere of the venue.

As a judge, I also felt the diversity of “good design,” so I provided many visual patterns in order to express this event where various “good designs” come together. The various visuals seem the same but are different; I hope that I have been able to express the current state of the GOOD DESIGN AWARD in even a small way.

The GOOD DESIGN EXHIBITION is the only opportunity to see the big picture, spanning diverse fields, of the “now” of design. Please enjoy the design of the exhibition, too.

“EVERYONE’S CHOICE FOR GOOD DESIGN” will be held for the first time at this year’s winners’ exhibition.

This project is an event in which visitors vote to decide on “EVERYONE’S CHOICE FOR GOOD DESIGN” from among the 20 pieces that received the GOOD DESIGN GOLD AWARD.

The winning design with the most votes will be announced at the award ceremony held on November 5. Vote for the “good” design of your choice! Please come along!
