Report on GOOD DESIGN AWARD 2024 Second Screening Session and BEST 100 screening! Results to be announced on August 23
2024.08.21
At the Second Screening Session, thousands of entries for screening were displayed at Makuhari Messe. The judges picked up each item, verifying application details, and had discussions from morning to evening. After a three-day-long screening, the items that passed the second screening (unofficial award) were finally determined! On the final day, a screening session for determining the GOOD DESIGN BEST100 also took place.
The Second Screening Session was held for three days from August 7 to 9. Actual articles such as home appliances, professional equipment, or large automobiles that could be displayed went on display. Entries such as designs for buildings, initiatives, and activities that could not be physically displayed, panel materials, and videos were displayed.
As with the first screening, entries that pass the screening are determined by each screening unit consisting of 4 to 6 judges per team. Items that pass the second screening are considered unofficially to receive the GOOD DESIGN AWARD.
Listen to, touch, and discuss everything at Second Screening Session
At the Second Screening Session, many of the judges stay in Makuhari to screen entries from dawn until dusk. Looking at the design, touching items, wearing wearable products, riding ridable products, and operating electrically movable products, they experience everything, read the submitted materials again, and discuss them thoroughly.
If judges need a deeper understanding of the design they see, they also carry out a hearing screening with the applicant.
This year, judges from overseas visited Makuhari Messe again to screen entries together. They had discussions with interpreters on global design trends, or how overseas applicants have been received in their respective countries.
A Focused Issues Researcher who has participated since this year said, “I had no idea that this much discussion would be had on each subject entry.” Each screening unit engaged in a series of discussions until they were satisfied in determining which items should pass the second screening.
BEST 100 selected from thousands of items
The candidates for the GOOD DESIGN BEST 100 are selected from the items that passed the second screening by each screening unit.
The unit leader (representative of the screening unit) makes a presentation to the unit leaders in other fields on the BEST 100 candidates they selected.
At the presentations, information was shared on the basis of what judges learned during hearing screenings and what they noticed when they tried out entries themselves as well as application details.
Discussions with “outcomes”
After the judges leaned about professional opinions in each domain and the background of each industry, the GOOD DESIGN BEST 100 screening session started.
During the over four-hour discussion, opinions were sometime divided. The judges analyzed each design from a wide variety of perspectives and considered its sustainability, its impact on people, and the kind of society it aims to create. Mr. Seiichi Saito noted this year’s message that “Judging Committee members from various backgrounds evaluate submissions through shared discussions to agree on an outcome,” and thus the GOOD DESIGN BEST 100 was also determined through discussions held to create a desired future through designs.
The results of the second screening will be announced on August 23
Applicants will be notified of the results of the second screening on August 23. Those who pass the second screening will register the release information and exhibition information, and preparations will begin for the BEST 100 presentation screening.
After the GOOD DESIGN BEST 100 presentation screening, special awards such as the GOOD DESIGN GOLD AWARD will be determined.
